A Fairy Tale of New York is a novel by author J. P. Donleavy, published in 1973.

The plot concerns Irish-American Cornelius Christian's return to New York after studying in Ireland.

The novel was based around Donleavy's earlier work Fairy Tales of New York, a successful stage play published in 1961.

 



James Patrick Donleavy (born April 23, 1926) is an Irish American author, born in New York City to Irish immigrants. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II after which he moved to Ireland where he studied at Trinity College, Dublin and became an Irish citizen.

Donleavy gained critical acclaim with his first novel, The Ginger Man, which is one of the Modern Library 100 best novels.

Correctly or incorrectly, his initial works are sometimes grouped with the Kitchen Sink artists as well as the Angry Young Men.
